VestAndPage Embark on Month-Long Performance

Previously featured performance artists VestAndPage embark on a month-long performance project tomorrow, May 8th 2015. The work is entitled 'Plantain'. During this ambitious work the duo plans to  walk the path of war exodus that Stenke’s ancestors trekked 70 years before. The artists have prepared several explorative texts on their website which illuminate an even deeper investigation of personal narrative, memory and identity.

The project builds on a one-month performance walk covering a distance of about 500 miles through Northern Germany and Poland to the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. This journey is documented by the artist duo as an art film including art actions, intercultural dialogues, poetic texts, found objects and soundscapes. The project turns into a sequence of moving images about memory and identity scanned through a social and geophysical lens.

Taking a private family story and historical event as starting point, Stenke and Pagnes inquire into the recent European history, focusing on the replaced - displaced - in-place body of today. They question how past and present speak to and through our bodies facing current ethical, social and existential challenges. The project investigates the process of acceptance of history and its individual and collective archiving, as well as the concepts of identity and permeability of cultural boarders.

Collaborations with national and international organizations and artists are part of the performance. On stages of the journey, Stenke and Pagnes are accompanied among others by the American sound designer Douglas Quin and German violinist Stephan Knies."
